The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Windle International Uganda Hand Over Modern Classrooms, Easing Overcrowding in Yumbe School

YUMBE, Uganda – November 19, 2025 – Windle International Uganda (WIU) today officially handed over new classroom blocks and sanitation facilities to Rockland Primary School in Yumbe District under the School Infrastructural Development Project (SIDE), marking a major step in alleviating severe overcrowding and improving learning conditions. The project was funded by The Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints.

The handover ceremony celebrated the completion of the SIDE project, which delivered two fully equipped classroom blocks and 10 stances of new latrines. The facilities include inclusive features such as wheelchair ramps and accessible toilets, underscoring a commitment to education for all, including learners with disabilities. The project also constructed dedicated latrine blocks for teaching staff.

“Before this intervention, the pupil-classroom ratio here was 1:185. This was more than a statistic; it was a daily barrier to learning,” said Andrew E. Omara, Executive Director of Windle International Uganda. “These new structures have reduced congestion and created a dignified, child-friendly environment where students can truly thrive. We are deeply grateful to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for their pivotal partnership.”

The new infrastructure has improved the pupil-to-classroom ratio from 1:185 to 1:137 and significantly enhanced the school’s Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) conditions.

A representative from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints stated, “We believe in empowering communities through education. Seeing these bright, eager children in their new classrooms reaffirms the impact of partnering with effective organizations like Windle International Uganda. This is an investment in the future leaders of Yumbe.”

The event was graced by the presence of the UNHCR Representative, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Yumbe, the Settlement Commandant, and other local leaders.
