Obongi, Uganda, 20 November 2025, Windle International Uganda (WIU) has today officially commissioned newly completed education facilities at Our Child Primary School in Obongi District, marking a transformative moment for learners and teachers in this refugee–host community setting.
Before the intervention, the school struggled with acute overcrowding, limited classroom space, and inadequate sanitation facilities — challenges that significantly affected learner attendance, retention, and overall well-being. Today’s handover represents a major improvement in the learning environment and offers renewed hope to the more than 1,400 children who depend on this school.
As part of the upgrade, six permanent classrooms have been completed, replacing overcrowded temporary structures and easing pressure on the school’s previously high pupil-to-classroom ratio of 1:201. The learning environment has been further improved through the construction of ten modern latrine stances, providing safer and more hygienic facilities for both boys and girls. Dedicated teachers’ sanitation facilities have also been added, addressing long-standing gaps in staff welfare and contributing to a safer and more professional school setting.
Learners will now study more comfortably thanks to the delivery of ninety-seven three-seater desks, which significantly improve seating conditions and reduce congestion in classrooms. In addition, the project has strengthened menstrual hygiene support for adolescent girls by providing emergency sanitary materials and equipping learners and teachers with skills in producing reusable sanitary pads. This support has already contributed to better attendance and reduced stigma among girls.
These improvements have brought immediate benefits: children now learn in brighter, safer, and more stable environments; teachers report greater motivation and classroom management capacity; and the wider community has expressed renewed optimism about the school’s future. The new infrastructure is expected to contribute directly to improved academic performance, confidence, and learner retention.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, WIU’s Executive Director, Andrew E. Omara emphasized the deeper meaning of the day’s milestone:
“The transformation we see today at Our Child Primary School is more than a construction achievement, it is an investment in dignity, safety, and opportunity for the children of Obongi. A proper classroom does more than shelter learning; it unlocks potential.”
Throughout the project, WIU worked closely with district authorities, school leadership, and community structures to ensure accountability, adherence to standards, and strong local ownership. The school has since strengthened its School Development Plan, prioritizing further improvements in water access, teacher housing, and classroom expansion.
