World Teachers’ Day: Celebrating teachers that shape communities, inspire learners, and build hope

At Yikuru Secondary School, Mr. Pitta Wilson is a proof to resilience and growth. He began his career as a classroom teacher, later served as a Senior Man Teacher, and today proudly leads the school as Head Teacher. His journey was supported by training in financial and human resource management, provided through Windle International Uganda (WIU)’s education strengthening programs.

“Those trainings were more than just sessions,” Mr. Pitta reflects. “They were stepping stones that helped me rise through the ranks. The supervision and guidance from WIU gave me confidence to lead, and today our learners from different countries live and learn together in unity.”

For him, World Teachers’ Day is more than a date on the calendar. “It is a time to reflect on the efforts teachers make to create a better world, by opening the eyes and ears of learners to issues like peace and unity.”

Beyond Yikuru, teachers across Uganda echo this sense of purpose. Mr. Ezama Godfrey, Head Teacher of Koboko Public Secondary School, notes:

“This day celebrates the unique role teachers play in shaping people. We are born with blank minds, and it is teachers who guide and mold us into who we become.”

He commends WIU for bridging gaps in access to education. “Many families cannot afford fees, but WIU supports vulnerable learners, especially girls. They pay teachers, train us, and provide scholastic materials. Through this, they’ve helped us bring harmony and unity through education.”

Learners themselves witness this impact daily. Ajuru Pauline, a Senior Three student at Yikuru, recalls how teachers restored her hope:

“Our teachers always remind us that we can succeed, no matter where we come from. Because of my family background, I almost gave up on school—I believed nothing good could come out of my family. But my teachers encouraged me to keep going.”

She also thanked WIU for providing scholastic materials and protecting students’ rights by actively fighting against gender-based violence in schools. “WIU has helped us stay in school and perform better,” Pauline adds.

Inspired by her teachers, Pauline now dreams of becoming a voice for change:

“I want to stand up against gender-based violence and be a beacon of hope in my school and beyond.” Written by Sylivestre Sabiiti:
