From Refugee to Student in Canada: Serges Amani Burindi’s Journey

My name is Serges Amani Burindi, and I am originally from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. For five years, I lived as a refugee in the Rwamwanja settlement in Uganda, specifically in the Kyempango Zone, Kyempango A5 village. Today, I am proud to call Matane, Québec, Canada my home.

My journey to Canada began with the Student Refugee Program (SRP) through the World University Services of Canada (WUSC). In April 2021, I applied to the SRP for the first time. Although I was shortlisted for the written test, I faced some challenges and didn’t succeed. However, I refused to give up and decided to try again the following year

In February 2022, I applied to the SRP for the second time. This time, I passed the written test and was invited for an oral interview in June 2022. By August 2022, I received the life-changing news: I had been accepted into the program. I felt an overwhelming sense of accomplishment and immediately began the immigration process, with the unwavering support of Windle International Uganda, which guided me every step of the way.

In August 2023, I finally made the journey from Uganda to Canada and became a permanent resident. Today, I am a student in the electronics program at Cégep de Matane, pursuing my dreams and building a new life in this beautiful country.

I want to express my deep gratitude to Windle International Uganda and its incredible team for their dedication and support. A special thank you goes to Sally Okumu Amony for her guidance and encouragement, not only to me but to all the SRP students in our cohort.
